A 60 South Internship: Learning Through Stories and Experience

Being an intern at 60 South these past three weeks has been an incredibly interesting and informative experience. Before this internship, I had worked to compose a STEM newsletter for my former high school. Through 60 South, I have been able to continue my passion for writing about science and continue to grow in this field through new experiences and challenges.

My favorite part of writing these blog posts was conducting interviews with people who had worked with the company in many different ways, from creating art to being a First Mate. Before this internship, I had never conducted an interview like this before, so I really enjoyed having the opportunity to learn more about this new skill. It was fascinating to hear about each person’s unique experiences and perspectives on the world and to learn about fields I knew very little about such as scientific illustration. Overall, it was amazing just to be able to have discussions with such incredible, fascinating people.

Through my time working with the company, I have also developed a great appreciation for 60 South’s values. The company is committed to following the rules and guidelines of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, and this was the first thing mentioned to me in each interview I had with a guide at the company when asked about their job. By working with this organization, 60 South is able to help preserve the nature in Antarctica. Additionally, through their smaller-sized ships, 60 South is able to give passengers a much more fulfilling experience in Antarctica, allowing them more time on the shore of Antarctica and a more personalized experience, all while leaving a smaller impact on the environment.

I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to work with 60 South and for the people who made it possible. I hope to have the opportunity to attend a trip myself someday!
