Next up in our crew spotlight is David Cueto, First Mate on the Hans Hanson and Meredian.

About David

Born and raised in Chile, David’s father and grandfather were both members of the Chilean Navy.  David was interested in boats, but he did not follow exactly in their footsteps. Instead, he went to university to become a Naval Architect. While at school, he decided to join the Sailing Club, and from there his passion for being on the water truly took shape. This led him to take a few extra courses to receive a license to be a deck officer. One of David’s favorite memories is sailing in Brazil at night, and witnessing the bioluminescent organisms make the waves glow around him.

Work and Memories with 60 South

David was initially introduced to 60 South by a friend in March of 2025 and has been working with the company ever since. David works as a member of the crew on ships and is in charge of tasks such as navigation and ensuring safe landing coordinates, which involves measuring and assessing the specific geographic location where a ship intends to land and anchor. David’s favorite part of the job is that each day brings something new. David often needs to be quick on his feet, as he must adapt to the unique set of challenges each day brings out on sea with limited resources. He particularly enjoys using the small crane onboard for different tasks such as putting microphones in the water to record whale sounds or devices which determine the components of the water.

David has also worked as a Naval Architect for the company, and is currently modifying their new vessel Meredian, which was once an Arctic fishing vessel, to have better accommodations for passengers, including eight new cabins with private bathrooms, and a new common room. He is very passionate and eager to talk about this new project, and enjoys working through obstacles such as regulations, structural design, and center of gravity.

What David loves about 60 South is that the people who come on each trip are adventurers. While the passengers could have chosen to go somewhere such as the Caribbean, they chose a vacation that may not be as relaxing, but that he has seen to be so rewarding. David believes that it is this adventurous spirit that truly connects the passengers and crew on each trip and makes working for the company so special.

Personal Projects and Interests

Although David claims to not get much free time, he still finds ways to relax and unwind. David loves watching new movies and tv shows. Additionally, he loves going on shore during trips and seeing wildlife. He is particularly fond of elephant seals and their babies.

We are so grateful to have David as part of our team, reminding us of the dedication it takes to run these trips, and to find joy in our everyday lives.
