Introducing Students to Antarctic Tourism
As part of the initiatives led by the Instituto Fueguino de Turismo (INFUETUR) and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), a group of 6th-grade students from School No. 16 had the opportunity to visit Ocean Tramp, one of 60 South’s expedition vessels, at the AFASyN dock in Ushuaia.
This was the first time local students engaged directly with an Antarctic sailing vessel, offering them a unique educational experience focused on understanding polar tourism, maritime activity, and Ushuaia’s role as the main gateway to Antarctica.
A Direct Connection with Maritime Life and the Crew
During the visit, students explored the different areas of the Ocean Tramp and learned firsthand about the crew’s daily tasks and the challenges of navigating the Southern Ocean.
The activity provided an authentic introduction to the operational dynamics of an expedition vessel and the impact that Antarctic voyages have on the city.
Students also received information about the nautical activities developed by the AFASyN Sailing Club, strengthening their understanding of the local maritime ecosystem and its connection to the Antarctic tourism industry.
An Expedition Vessel with a Strong Polar Track Record
Ocean Tramp is well known for its trajectory as an expedition vessel, carrying out regular voyages to Antarctica with travelers from Europe, the United States, and beyond. Its design, preparation, and operational capabilities make it an ideal platform for introducing students, researchers, and visitors to the polar regions.
The visit highlighted the educational and scientific value that these vessels bring to the community, reinforcing the importance of responsible tourism and awareness of the fragile southern ecosystems.
A Joint Initiative Promoting Responsible Antarctic Tourism
This inter-institutional activity—led by INFUETUR, IAATO, AFASyN, and 60 South—underscores the province’s commitment to community awareness and the development of responsible, informed, and sustainable Antarctic tourism.
With support from the Ministry of Education, the initiative allowed local students to access this experience for the first time, strengthening their connection to Tierra del Fuego’s Antarctic identity.

Through initiatives like this, Ushuaia continues to consolidate its role as a leading hub for Antarctic education, polar tourism, scientific activity, and conservation efforts in the Southern Hemisphere.
