Travel and science: Discover science projects with 60 South
“Hello, my name is Sabrina Warner, and this past January I had the pleasure of interning with 60 South to help showcase some of the scientific research conducted during their voyages. Among the featured projects is the work of Dr. Brenda Hall, who studied glacial history; Claire Flynn, who focused on penguin populations; Dr. Bo Liu, who researched penguin vocalizations; and Dr. Martin Ramirez—also known as Spider-Man—who discovered a new species of spider in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago.
Two passengers, Mo and Christoph, also took part in Claire Flynn’s expedition, assisting with her research while sailing past snow-covered mountains and stunning icebergs. The research carried out on board includes the use of quartz isotopes to determine when glaciers retreated, the study of differences between penguin species and how their calls vary between groups, as well as the discovery of new species in remote regions such as Antarctica and Tierra del Fuego.”
